Welcome to the Department of Architecture and Building Homepage !
The Department is the only architecture and building school in Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific. It was established in 1969, and graduated the country’s first architects in 1973. To date the Department has graduated over 500 hundred architects and builders.
It is the only School of Architecture and Building in Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific region excluding Australia and New Zealand that has being producing Architects and Builders since its inception. The school enrolled its first student in 1970 with students from Pacific Island countries, such as Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Importantly, the school has supported many international students from the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to achieve academic success. The School of Architecture and Building is dedicated to teaching and research in support of the built environment professions in Papua New Guinea.
With over 200 undergraduate students studying architecture, construction management and quantity surveying, the school this year enrolled its first two post graduate students in Architecture.
The school enjoys the highest level of interaction with the industrial and professional institutes and our graduates are well regarded by industry and employers. Faculties member play strategic role in professional institutions like Papua New Institute of Architects (PNGIA) and the Papua New Guinea Institute of Builders (PNGIOB).
The Department of Architecture and Building has always had a proud history of Teaching and Learning, being the first Department to have its course accredited by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) for the architecture course and the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) for the building course.
The Department houses the only traditional PNG architecture heritage collection. The collection differentiates this Department from other Departments in the university. With this the Department has the potential of becoming a leading school in tropical architecture in the Pacific region.
