Welcome to the Department of Agriculture at PNG University of Technology.

The Department of Agriculture has a rich history since it was a part of University of Papua New Guinea (1972-1985) in Port Moresby.  This Department has gone from strength to strength after it’s re-affiliation to the PNG University of Technology and relocation to Lae in 1986.

Department operates with three pronged approach of teaching, research and extension or community outreach activities. Department offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees in Agriculture and contribute to manpower development of the Papua New Guinea and several island nations of the South Pacific. The undergraduate program consists of a four year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.Sc.Ag), and the Bachelor of Agriculture and Rural Development (BARD) course, which is offered in distance mode. Department offers science based agriculture curriculum which is well tuned to meet skill and technical know-how requirements of the PNGs Agro industry. Regular annual intake of students in B.Sc.Ag program is about 35-40 students. Department also offers three postgraduate programs, Master of Science in Agriculture, Master of Philosophy (M. Phil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Recently, the Academic Board of the University approved a Master of Science in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Program in distance mode.

The academic activities of the Department are driven by 17 qualified and resourceful faculties, of which 12 are with PhDs. We have a strong research and teaching portfolio in different disciplines of agricultural sciences. Our research activities are focused on to solve national and global problems pertaining to efficient and responsible (environmental friendly) crop/animal production. Faculty members of the department are actively engaged in several inter-institutional collaborations and they take part in national and international research projects. Many of the faculty members are well known researchers in their fields and they publish regularly in regional and international journals. Department annually publishes a peer-reviewed research journal Niugini Agrisaiens to promote research culture. Research and teaching activities are aptly supported by the state of the art Unitech Analytical Services Laboratory; a 39 ha farm with livestock husbandry/ mosaics of perennial crops and in-house student laboratories.

The South Pacific Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SPISARD) is the extension/outreach arm of the Department. Through SPISARD farmers/farm women are regularly trained on life skills and crop production related technologies in villages.
