The PNG University of Technology introduced the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT-P) as a compulsory Aptitude Test for all grade twelve (12) School Leavers who wished to be considered for admissions to all courses at UOT beginning 2017.
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test is offered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is used widely in Australia, as well as in New Zealand, Ireland and the UK. Its purpose is to measure candidates' aptitude or ability (capacity to perform), rather than to measure achievement (demonstrated performance), which takes place at the Secondary School level.
The University of Goroka is teaming up with the PNG University of Technology to run the STAT-P Test for student admission into both universities in the 2018 academic year, while the PNG University of Natural Resources & Environment (UNRE) will assist them to implement the test.
The PNG University of Technology (UOT) and University of Goroka (UOG) will use the STAT-P aptitude test offered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in addition to the Grade 12 Examination results of SLs to screen all entry applications. The purpose is to introduce a common measurable element into the selection process that will ensure that only candidates who have the capacity to benefit from tertiary education are selected. UOG also requires their pre-service non-SLs to complete the test.
The test will be conducted simultaneously in ten (10) centers across the country from Tuesday 7th to Thursday 9th November 2017.
The confirmed centers for the tests are Port Moresby National High School (Port Moresby), University of Natural Resources and Environment (Kokopo), Holy Trinity Teachers College (Mt. Hagen), University of Goroka (Goroka), University of Technology (Lae), Mercy Secondary School (Wewak), Cameroon Secondary School (Alotau), EcomSecondary School (Manus), Hutjena Secondary School (Buka) and Kiunga Secondary School (Kiunga).
