History

The Bulolo Forestry College was established in 1962 to train foresters to take up jobs in the forestry sector and other organizations in the country.

The College was amalgamated with the PNG University of Technology in 1995 and is now known as Bulolo University College which is a campus of Unitech.

The College is ideally located in Bulolo where there is a 10,000 hectare forest plantation, sawmill and the only plymill in the country.  This enables the students to have access to these facilities for their field practical work.

The Bulolo University College has been instrumental in producing human resource requirement not only for the forestry sector but also for the other government departments and industries for the development of Papua New Guinea for the last 53 years.

Introduction

Bulolo University College is a campus of PNG University of Technology, Lae.  The College is under the Forestry Department which takes in second and third year forestry students.  Students who don’t acquire the required grades are awarded a Diploma in Forestry after the completion of the third year program in Bulolo.

The College is ideally located for Forestry studies.  The environment is conducive for students to focus on their studies.  The student’s personal development physically, spiritually and mentally has been excellent over the years.

Programs/Courses

The Department of Forestry has a new integrated degree and diploma curriculum which are offered at Unitech and Bulolo campuses respectively.

The first year is a common one for both degree and diploma programmes and is taken at Taraka (Lae) campus.  It is intended to provide the student with a thorough grounding in the basic sciences:  biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and principals of geology together with study and communication skills and an introduction to information technology.  An introduction to Forestry is also provided.

The second year is also a common one for both programmes and is taken at Bulolo campus.  It is designed to give the foundation of forestry science and some basic practical skills.  Topics studied include Botany and Dendrology, Ecology and Bio-diversity, Silviculture, Soils, Surveying, Mensuration, Fire Protection, Forest Product and Industries, Business Skills and Communication and Negotiation Skills.

The third year of the study commences with a semester of supervised industrial work experience for both streams of students.  On completion of the first semester work experience, the study continues at Bulolo and Takara campuses; however it is streamlined into diploma and degree courses.

For the diploma course, further studies done at Bulolo campus through further enhancement of application and integration of forestry science with Silviculture, Communication and Negotiation Skills, Forest Inventory, Timber Harvesting, Forest Engineering, Non Industrial Forestry, Human Resource Management and Forest Policy and Legislation.

The third and fourth year degree continues at Taraka campus.

The Department of Forestry in 2015 have thoroughly revised the integrated degree and diploma curriculum which aims to run the three-year diploma program in Bulolo campus and the degree program in Taraka (Lae) campus.  This year 2016 sees 30 students admitted into the first year diploma program in Bulolo campus.
