Dr. Kaul Gena was appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor Administration in November 2014. He started his academic career at PNG University of Technology as assistant lecturer in 1993 after completing Bachelor of Science Degree majoring Geology from University of Papua New Guinea. While being employed at Unitech he pursued further studies in submarine hydrothermal deposits in the Western Pacific and was awarded a Master of Science in Resource Geology and a PhD in engineering majoring Economic Geology from Akita University, Japan in 1998 and 2001 respectively. He was employed at Unitech until 2008 when he resigned to take up a Senior Lecturer appointment at Western Australian School of Mines(WASM), Curtin University, Australia. He taught at WASM until 2011 when he resigned and returned to Unitech as an Associate Professor with the Mining Engineering Department.
He is an experienced researcher in economic geology and an associate professor with an emphasis in teaching geology to Mining Engineers, Mineral Processing Engineers, Civil Engineers, Surveyors and Foresters. He has researched and worked in five different governmental organisations in Australia, PNG and Japan.
He brings twenty (20) years of technical experiences as a researcher and lecturer to the management team. His area of research is mainly hydrothermal ore deposits specialising in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. He has done extensive research on presently forming submarine hydrothermal deposits in Okinawa trough, Marianna Arc and Manus Basin. He provided consultancy services to Mining Industry in Papua New Guinea and served on PNG Environmental Council, PNG National Education Board and Simbu Development Corporation as a board member.
