The Main collection is home to over 90,000 books and it’s the largest collection on open shelves in the library.  It reflects the broad offerings of the University and covers the largest range of course-related subjects to meet its diverse teaching and research needs.

The Collection is open during the week from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm and over the weekend from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. It is located on the first floor of the library. Books are loaned for a period of four weeks.

This collection contains books written on/about Papua New Guinea. It’s a special collection that is kept in Matheson library and the books are used in-house, meaning they are not allowed to be borrowed out of the building. The loan period is only two hours at any one time.

The library has a Special Reserve Collection of material to be used within the library for up to two hours at a time.

This collection consists of materials (textbooks, lecture notes, articles) expected to be in heavy demand.

This collection contains recommended text books by lecturers and they are kept at the back of the Circulation desk. Because the copies are limited, they are only allowed two hours of borrowing time and are not to be taken out of the building.

The Reference Collection consists of Encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, guides, and indexes covering most subject areas. Atlases, statistical sources, and yearbooks are also located here. These materials are not available for loan.

Periodicals form a very significant part of the requirements for the courses offered in the University. The periodical collection of the library consists of 1900 titles. They include journals, magazines, memoirs, proceedings, bulletins, gazettes, reviews, reports, newspapers, and newsletters.
