History
The School (now Department) of Architecture and Building was amongst the first batch of six schools established during the early years of the University of Technology on Taraka Campus. The course was introduced as Architecture, Building Technology and Planning; however main emphasis was placed on Architecture. Degrees in the beginning were conferred only to Architecture but later to Building.
The first intake of students was in 1970 and about 7 students enrolled in the first year. These students includes; HANDEN, Benedict from Manus, KOLAN, John from Buka, MOSES, John Vagi from Central Province, MUAPUA, Gregory from the Trobriand Islands and one other (unnamed).
The first academic staff appointment was in 1970 with 4 lecturers including Professor Neville Quarry (Australian) appointed as the pioneer Head of School, Mr. Stanley Barker (Australian) the pioneer senior Lecturer, Mr. Adrian Boddy (Australian) the pioneer Technical Instructor, Mr. Joe Toveve the pioneer Technical Officer from East New Britain and his assistant Butic Zerio from Morobe Province and Mrs. Anna Muriki as the receptionist.
