First Batch of Degree of Science in Geomatics Graduates: Matilda Naiawi Encourages more to pursue program
The School of Surveying and Lands Studies graduated its first batch of Bachelors Degree of Science in Geomatics during the 57th Graduation on Friday.
The program covers geographic information systems, remote sensing, photogrammetry, global positioning and surveying, spatial statistics, and computer science. Basically, instructions in geographical information systems and remote sensing are incorporated to give a taste of the range of technological tools available to assist in decision-making processes for effective property management and development. Career opportunities of this program include a geospatial analyst, GIS technician, Geodesy Research Associate, Survey Operations coordinator, and more.
The batch had a total of six graduates – five males and one female.
Matilda Naiawi said it was an honor to graduate as the first female for the program.

Naiawi chose to study over a gained interest when she started working as a survey store person within the School of Surveying and Lands Studies in 2018. She graduated with a diploma in 2021 and continued to pursue her degree to this achievement despite the countless setbacks.
“Anything is possible – we must always strive for growth. I thank PNGUoT for offering a program that my course mates and I have learned so much from.”
She added that this program offers a deeper insight into surveying and land studies and encourages more to apply for this program.

She encourages more females to take this program as it is a male dominated field.
Naiawi acknowledged God, her family – Naiawis, her partner – George Gauba and his family, and her colleagues, describing them as her support system spanning her academic journey.
