Papua New Guinea University of Technology’s Unitech Enterprises Limited (UEL) graduated twenty-three students with certificates for training on specialized research methods last Friday at PNGUoT’s Taraka Campus in Lae.

The pioneer training from the 17th – 29th of November saw participants attending from other  parts of Papua New Guinea, engaging in much needed training of specialized Research Methods.

Participants after the presentation with UEL Manager, Joseph Boi at the School of Agriculture at PNGUoT’s Taraka Campus.

The two-week training facilitator, Ms. Betty Tiko, gave a background of the training and how effective that training is.

The participants were taught on how to identify challenges in the workplace; develop objectives; and identify the methods that they can employ to achieve those objectives according to those challenges”.

“Specifically on how to use Cobaltad for administrative data collecting; design questions for data collection; and also coding of data; which can be imported onto Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for data analysis”.

“This training showed a need for industries to engage their employees to attend training like this where there’s a need for research in order to achieve certain goals. However, some of them have secondary existing data that needs proper analysis to actually make sense when it comes to reporting”.

The largest participant group for the training was from the Department of Labour and Industry from Port Moresby. The nine participants attended the training as a need to upgrade their research methods.

Louisa Frank, a participant from the group of nine said they found the  training very helpful with their professions in terms of an upcoming survey, called the labour force survey.

“This training is something one can achieve in a longer period of time, however, we were fortunate enough to be learning this in just two weeks”.

“There’s a need for this training in government departments when it comes to research and data analysis. It will help immensely through the transitioning of old data collection formats into digital data collections and analysis. I will urge more industries to send their employees to attend this training”.

Ms. Frank thanked  UEL through PNGUoT for offering this much needed training for a greater good of every growing industry.

Another participant from Enga Province, who’s transitioning year from UOG’s Enga Campus to Innovative University of Enga ithis year said, “we have staff development strategies in place which whenever there are short courses or trainings as this, we apply or express our interests and the Enga Provincial Government funds it”.

“If there will be another training that goes in line with what we want to achieve in our career pathways, we will still attend.”

He suggested that maybe UEL can run more of these training annually as there will be more participants registering for this training.
