Head of School
Welcome Message from the Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering

Dr. Kamalakanta Muduli
Associate Professor
Head of the Mechanical Engineering School
The primary goal of the School of Mechanical Engineering at PNGUoT is to offer quality undergraduate education through student-centred teaching and learning, deliver research-based postgraduate programs, collaborate with industry and develop linkages with international institutions and partners. The school has also taken initiatives to engage with the communities in PNG to deliver projects for mutual win-win situations and benefits.
A Tradition of Excellence
Since its establishment, the School of Mechanical Engineering at PNGUoT has been dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and industry collaboration. Our faculty comprises highly experienced academics, researchers, and industry professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and practical expertise into the classroom. We take pride in fostering a learning environment that encourages creativity, problem-solving, and technological innovation.
Our curriculum is designed to equip students with strong foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in core areas such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing processes, robotics, and automation. Apart from the hard-core engineering courses, students will also take courses that will promote soft skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, leadership, ethics and working independently. With an emphasis on both theoretical learning and practical application, we ensure that our graduates are not only proficient in engineering principles but also adept at applying them to real-world challenges.
The bachelor program [B.Engg.(Mech.)(Hons)] offered will provide the necessary background for further specialization in research areas such as Design and Manufacturing, Thermal and Fluid Systems, Energy and Environment, and Materials. The department also encourages the UG students for acquisition of higher postgraduate degrees (Masters and PhD Programs) so that they become part of the academic staff of the school in line with the University strategy of 2025-2029 for developing the local work force.
Global Recognition through Washington Accord Accreditation
The Washington Accord is a highly regarded international agreement among leading engineering accreditation bodies worldwide. Since 2015, our school has been working on obtaining accreditation for its undergraduate program through the Washington Accord. A provisional accreditation of the Undergraduate program was granted to the School in 2019, and the School continued to improve in all quality aspects and received full accreditation in 2024. Being accredited under this accord indicates that our graduates now have increased mobility and recognition across numerous countries, including Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and many others. This accreditation provides them with a competitive edge, opening doors to international career opportunities, global collaborations, and postgraduate studies in prestigious institutions around the world.
Achieving this accreditation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, students, and university leadership. It underscores our unwavering commitment to maintaining high academic standards, continuously improving our curriculum, and staying at the forefront of engineering education. This milestone is not only a source of pride for PNGUoT but also for the entire nation, as it strengthens our country’s position in the global engineering community.
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Industry Collaboration
At PNGUoT, we believe that a strong engineering education is built upon a solid foundation of practical experience. To this end, our school is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced research facilities, and modern engineering workshops that provide students with hands-on learning opportunities. Our students engage in practical projects, internships, and industry collaborations that bridge the gap between academia and the professional world.
We have established strong partnerships with industry leaders, government agencies, and research institutions, ensuring that our curriculum remains relevant to the current demands of the engineering sector. Through these collaborations, our students have the opportunity to participate in real-world projects, gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies, and develop the skills necessary to tackle complex engineering challenges.
Empowering the Next Generation of Engineers
As the Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering, I am committed to fostering an environment that encourages innovation, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. We strive to nurture engineers who are not only technically competent but also ethical, socially responsible, and adaptable to the dynamic nature of the engineering profession.
Our graduates have gone on to make significant contributions in various sectors, including energy, mining, manufacturing, transportation, and infrastructure development. With the new accreditation, we are confident that our graduates will continue to excel and make an impact on a global scale, driving progress and innovation in their respective fields.
