THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AIMS TO REVIVE ACCREDITATION

The School of Architecture and Construction Management of Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) conducted  a week-long major workshop aimed at evaluating the schools academic and administrative operations this year.

Acting Head of School (HoS) for Architecture and Construction Management, Dr. Jerry Jimmy Walliah said, these workshops are split into the mini workshop which runs mid year,  and a major workshop at the end of the year.

“These workshops have contributed immensely towards the growth of the school where these workshops are leading back to the accreditation of the school that dated back in 1997.

The School of Architecture and Construction Management, was known as the Department of Architecture and Building in 1970 when it was established. The courses offered were the Bachelor of Architecture in 1970 and later changed to Bachelor of Architecture and Building in 1975.  In 1990, the program was offered separately as Bachelor of Architecture, and Bachelor of Building.

In 1992, the department pursued international accreditation for the Bachelor of Building program and took up membership with the Australasian Universities Building Educator Association (AUBEA) in 1997. In 2002, a full accreditation was awarded by Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) and the Papua New Guinea Institute of Architects (PNGIA) for the Bachelor of Architecture program.

These accreditations made the Bachelor of Building program and Bachelor of Architecture program the only two internationally recognized courses in the university during that period.

Dr. Walliah said, however in the mid 2000s, the School stopped renewing its accreditation due to lack of funding support. Therefore, these workshops will help us polish up to continue renewing our accreditations.

He highlighted that the School will be graduating its first Masters program batch in 2026, and is also offering its Undergraduate programs online.
