About Faculty of Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation
Postgraduate studies and research have always been the cornerstone for the PNG University of Technology’s academic programs.
UNITECH offers the postgraduate programs from the Postgraduate Certificate to the Doctorate levels. Currently, UNITECH has 22 PhD, 40 Masters, 3 PG Diploma and 2 PG Certificate Programs on offer.
Candidates for the course based study programs, must enrol at the beginning of semester 1. However, the candidates for the research based degrees (PhD, MPhil), can enrol either at the beginning of the first and/or the second semester.
Intending PG students are advised to check the PG Calendar 2022 for up-to-date information on the rules and regulations guiding the postgraduate programs they may wish to join. For detailed information on the courses and specific requirements, students are advised to contact the respective academic departments for further information.
All the academic departments have qualified academic staff with experience in PG supervision in various disciplines. Moreover, UNITECH has approved the appointment of Adjunct faculty to fulfil specialized academic needs in degree supervision and/or teaching. UNITECH has MOUs with many institutions/organizations to best pool available talents from industries/organizations in the region.
Two separate male and female dorms are available to accommodate the postgraduate students. Meals are also provided in the student cafeteria.

The Graduate Assistantship Program (GAP) was established at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) in 2001 to address the deficiencies of the prior Assistant Lectureship (AL) Program, which had been operational since 1974. The primary aim of GAP is to attract graduates with first and Master’s degrees who have demonstrated strong academic performance or relevant industrial experience.
The University offers 15 GAP scholarship slots annually for Master’s and PhD studies. The GAP serves a dual purpose: cultivating potential academic staff for PNGUoT while fostering a well-trained workforce for the rapidly expanding industries in Papua New Guinea. Ultimately, the program is designed to enhance human capacity across various sectors within the country, particularly in academia at PNGUoT. Upon completion of their advanced studies, graduates may be employed by the University, contingent upon available opportunities and meeting departmental requirements; alternatively, they may pursue careers in other relevant sectors.
