MCSSSA Cleanathon Brightens the School Grounds

Date: Friday, 18 April 2025
Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Venue: School of Mathematics and Computer Science, PNG University of Technology
Organized by: Mathematics and Computer Science Students and Staff Association (MCSSSA)

In the spirit of Easter and to make the most of the public holiday on Friday, 18 April 2025, the Mathematics and Computer Science Students and Staff Association (MCSSSA) successfully hosted a vibrant Cleanathon activity. This student-led initiative transformed the School’s surroundings while encouraging teamwork, leadership, and environmental responsibility.

Undergraduate students turned out in large numbers and formed four working groups, each assigned to a different section of the School compound. Their collective efforts were supported by two committed staff members:

  • Mrs. Sine Banit, who coordinated tool support through the Housing Office and Grounds team.

  • Mr. Silas, who ensured electrical safety by checking all encountered appliances.

The Cleanathon featured a range of beautification, sanitation, and light maintenance tasks, including:

  • Washing the main staircase to remove buai stains using sugar water.

  • Scraping off mould and fungus from the building exterior with trowels.

  • Gardening and landscaping, including:

    • Trimming flowers (following earlier efforts by Ms. Rebecca),

    • Cutting grass around the compound,

    • Cementing and painting flower beds, and adding basic brickwork.

  • Ground maintenance, notably levelling a hump in front of the building for smoother access.

  • Gravel transport from the sewerage area for use in flower bed cementing.

Essential materials such as brooms, gloves, mops, and garbage bags were provided by the School, with additional equipment supplied by the Grounds team. The event demonstrated how well-planned collaboration between students and staff can lead to meaningful change.

Beyond improving the physical appearance of the School, the Cleanathon offered students practical experience in teamwork, leadership, and time management. It also enhanced their connection to the School community, promoted mental wellbeing, and raised awareness of the importance of maintaining clean and safe spaces.

The activity concluded with light refreshments, and the visible results reflected the energy and dedication of all involved.

Special appreciation goes to MCSSSA President Azriel Gamiandu and Vice President Jenitha Wale, whose outstanding leadership and organization made this event possible. Their initiative and commitment serve as an excellent model for fellow students.

This Cleanathon stands as a proud moment for the School of Mathematics and Computer Science—showcasing the impact of student-driven action and reinforcing the value of extracurricular engagement in shaping a vibrant and responsible university community.
