Welcome to this small but unique and dynamic department. It is unique in that it offers two very different and separate degree programs yet the staff and students work together harmoniously.. This creates an opportunity for our students to form lasting network of friends and potential business partners in the two very different yet related fields of practice.

Our annual average is around 30 graduates and our employable rate is among the highest in the University with 90% of our graduates employed within six months of completion of their degree programs.

Our vision is “To become a quality department that produces intellectual manpower for Papua New Guinea’s development and sustenance”. Our mission is “To focus on high-class teaching and quality research, continuously strive to produce future leaders rich in intelligence and innovations in the field of Applied Chemistry and Food Technology, and simultaneously concentrate in strengthening and enlightening the community”.

Our courses are revised periodically to keep it current. We have key stakeholders and an Industrial Advisory Committee who contribute to regular curriculum review and development. Last review was completed last year (2021) with the main purpose to align the Subject Learning Outcomes with the Program Outcomes; expectations of government; the National Qualifications Framework, External standards, Professional accreditation requirements and the University’s vision, mission and graduate attributes. It was also to bring the curriculum up to the international professional standards comparable to those of other Universities around the globe, and to include the current and new developments in the broader areas of Food and Agriculture sector and Applied Chemistry.

Research, innovation and entrepreneurship are also a priority area of interest for both staff and students and projects are targeted towards solving both community and industry needs. Joint industry-department research activities have seen some adaptable innovative solutions to address problems both within the industry and communities.
